Chandeliers conjure visions of royalty, grandeur and opulence. Though sleeker and slimmer versions have evolved, there’s still an aura of antiquity that surrounds a chandelier. So when one is striving for an antique look for his home, going in for turn-of-the-century furniture, a decadent looking fireplace and a chandelier are the first things on his mind.If you are one of the lucky ones who possess an old chandelier handed down to you through generations, then you wouldn’t need to lift a finger. For the not so lucky ones, you would need to hunt for a piece that would look convincingly old. Shops selling antique pieces would definitely be your first stop. For nothing can really replicate that old look better than a piece actually made years back. But if they cannot satisfy you, you have no other choice but to get a ready-made variety and try to give it an old look.

First, steer clear of the slim-trim polished-steel chandeliers. These are especially designed for modern homes with clean-cut furniture and can never be passed off as old. Antique chandeliers are ornate pieces with very intricate carvings.

Candle chandeliers have an inherent archaic feel to them. An antique chandelier can be made of crystal, wrought iron, or brass or antlers, and they are never shiny in appearance. That is why you just cannot buy a wrought-iron or a brass type of chandelier and install it, hoping that it would impart an antique look to the environs. The chandelier must be worked upon so that there is an authentic antique feel to it. To replicate an old look, you need to apply an antiquing glaze on it. While the glaze is still wet, you need to rub off the shine from it with a soft cloth. The latter is done to achieve a worn-out look.

After working on the chandelier, it is also important o have the other furniture catered to the antique look. For a single antique or antique-looking chandelier cannot bring about an antique feel in the ambience. A chandelier will look antique only when there’s an antique atmosphere around it.

The real purpose of a Picture Frame is to focus and protect pictures. Antique Picture Frames are precursors to wholesale products in acrylic or metal. Antique Picture Frames have a history dating to the 2nd century B.C., with the finding of borders around Etruscan cave paintings. The frames were primarily used for isolating and safeguarding particular paintings.

The first Antique Picture Frame was the carved wooden frame found in the Middle Ages, when frames were usually made by painter himself. It was during the Renaissance that frame making gained prominence. Professional frame makers came into the forefront and Antique Picture Frames reflected the furniture style, from ornate to gilded or rococo. Generally in wood or metal, Antique Picture Frames add a touch of glamour to surroundings, and at the same time enhance a picture.Antique Picture Frames can be in Victorian style designs in carved or ornamental wood or metal. Not everyone can afford genuine Antique Picture Frames, but popular reproductions are available. Made in wood or metal, these reproductions appear like genuine pieces and suit our budget. The word of caution: if Antique Picture Frames are not used appropriately they can mess up the picture and decor of a house. One can be an art connoisseur, but if frames just do not gel with modernistic fittings then whole purpose of antique frame is lost. No point in distracting attention from the framed picture, which is as precious as the antique frame.

With mass-produced items gaining economic predominance, a majority of us prefer simple frames in wood or plastic to reflect personal style. Antique frames in wood and metal became collector’s items. It was not long before changing attitudes and perspectives have forced Antique Picture Frames into the limelight. They have once again graduated from collectors’ item to a must-have item.

Outdoor decor is the primary element for making that great yard happen. Do you take your outdoor area as seriously as the indoors of your home? We all love putting out fresh new looks in our homes this time of year, but have you thought recently about the outside? Often we’re so busy decorating or redecorating inside, but we forget to do the same outside as well. So here are a few quick and easy outdoor decorating tips that will help spruce up the curb appeal of your home:

Whether you live in the country or just have a small patio in a city dwelling, you can spruce up your outdoors and enjoy it more. There are so many ways to make the outside look nice. You can paint the entire house and trim, or simply touch up the trim alone… either way will make a huge impact on how your home looks to the passing public. If you already have a porch or patio, simply putting new furniture out can make a wonderful difference in the presentation of your home. Alternatively, you can simply buy new cushions or covers for your existing patio furniture. Other quick patio spruce ups can be as simple as putting out a few flowering potted plants, adding gnomes or statues, or putting a small water fountain into the space. It’s easy to find the decor outdoor accessories that can make your yard look just as great as your living room. Probably the most popular way to spruce up a yard quickly is to simply put out some pretty plants, bushes, vines and flowers. Annuals are great for adding dashes of color quickly, because you can usually buy them this time of year in bloom. To get continuous color and greenery, plant some perennials too. Then once the annuals are starting to die out, you’ll have something to replace them. You’ll also have the added joy of seeing the perennials sprout again for several years to come.

Home improvement projects are very important in keeping the house looking its very best. Not only does it look nice on the outside, but also having a nice house to go home to puts everybody in a better mood and makes for a positive attitude at home. So when you get your piece of bargain furniture home, break out a can of paint and get busy working your magic. Before painting a piece of furniture, you will need to be sure that it has been thoroughly cleaned. Then you will want to make sure that its surfaces are smoothed over as well. While it is easiest painting unfinished furniture, you should not have any problem applying a new coat of paint to a piece of furniture that has been previously painted.

Painting the house is usually the project that makes everything look its very best and can tie everything together. You always want to make sure that you have good ventilation when you are working with paint. First, make sure that your furniture is sanded and smooth. Then wipe any excess dust away with a tack cloth. Then you are ready to apply a thin coat of primer with a foam brush. If you have to cover a large surface, you can use a roller and then let the primer completely dry. If you are painting a piece of furniture that is metal, plastic or even laminate, you can find spray paint that is specifically formulated to stick to these nonporous surfaces. Hold the spray can about ten inches from your surface and apply a thin coat of spray with an even side-to-side motion.

With a well-painted house, homeowners can expect the rest of their remodel to fall into place nicely. Homeowners will have to decide what color they want and what kind of contrast they are looking for, as well as what supplies they will need to buy. When you are choosing your paint color, look for one that will help your new bargain find peace with the rest of your décor. You can paint your new acquisition to blend with your current furniture, or you can paint it to stand out as an accent piece. Either choice will create a lovely space. If you decide that you want your piece of furniture to blend into your current space, you will have to determine what you want it to blend with. You can paint it to match the wall, other furniture or even the floor.

Children love to play outdoors. But when it rains or it snows, they need another place to play in so why don’t your turn your attic into a playroom?

Can you really turn the attic into a playroom? That answer really depends if the room is worthy. You can easily find out by getting a tape measure and seeing if this can be done. If you are able to walk in here without any squeaks or noises, the odds are in your favor because it can support the weight of your kids and their friends.

Before you hammer away, make sure you get all the permits required from the mayor’s office. You will have to get this yourself if you are the one going to do it. But if you hired a contractor, they can take care of the leg work so you don’t have to worry about anything. One of the things that you have to provide in your renovated attic is proper lighting. Your children cannot rely on the bulb that is already there during the daytime. What you can do is install a skylight so there is natural light entering the room.

Proper installation of the skylight depends on the path of the sun during the course of the day. You can even install several and make sure there are shades so the room is not very hot to be in during the summer months.

Natural light can also enter the playroom if there is a window. If there is one already, then that is one thing you don’t have to worry about. But if there is none, talk to the carpenter. It doesn’t have to look like a conventional window. In fact, you can even use an oddly shaped or off sized design.

The next two things to work on are the walls and the floors. You should make sure there is sufficient insulation on the walls so again it is not too hot during the summer. They should also be painted using light colors to add to the lighting already provided by the windows and skylight.

If the kids will be coloring in this room, make sure that you are using materials that are durable and easy to clean. A good example is laminated flooring and you can use either marble or painted wood.

The nice thing about turning the attic into a playroom is that you don’t have to buy new furniture. One plastic table and a few plastic chairs will do. If the kids want to sleep here, you can easily roll out a mattress and hide it by putting these inside a trunk. Should there older guests dropping by, then perhaps a fold out couch will add a nice touch.

The playroom can also be used as a study area or a library by putting shelves on the small spaces. Naturally, you can place books here as well as stuffed animals balls and other things that will be within their reach.

Since the shelves are not enough for old your kid’s toys, don’t forget to put in a trunk or a small cabinet for them. If it is not that expensive to have these custom made, then go ahead so you are able to maximize space.

Turning the attic into a playroom is quite easy. Make sure you have all the cleaning materials nearby since you will have to clean it up when they are done.
