When to Hire Professionals for Home Improvement

08 Jul

Do-it-yourself projects can be fun, but there are times when you will definitely need a professional to take care of some of the work. Let’s take a look at some of the projects you might need to hire out:

  • Roofing
  • Plumbing
  • Electric
  • Masonry

These four areas of construction require knowledge and often permits. You may find your state or city does not allow you to do this work without a permit and if you do not have the proper license you may have to hire it out. It is a good idea to hire this stuff out anyway if you are not a professional because a lot can go wrong.

For all other home improvement projects you can probably get by on your own. If you have questions make sure you ask them of a professional, online, or via books before you start. Sitcoms have been great examples of why we might not want to do our own home improvement projects. Plumbing has often been used in which the husband tries to fix the problem only to make it worse because he didn’t know what he was doing. It happens in real life a lot.

By the time you call in a professional or get an answer to your question it might be too late. You may spend more in hiring the professional after you try to improve your home. Keep this is mind and then make certain you go shopping for the proper materials, getting everything you need the first time around.

It is not fun to realize you have to go back out in the middle of the project when you really cannot afford to leave. It is worse when you realize you need cash in a flash to solve the issue. So, before you start any project gain the proper knowledge because this is where the true savings will lie. If you need to, ask a professional or hire one because you can save yourself a lot if you start the project properly and follow it through appropriately.

05 May

Have you ever had a problem when there are not enough bathrooms in your own home? The solution of course will be to construct another one. So why not turn the attic into a bathroom?

Turning the attic into a bathroom or any other living space requires planning. The key to making this happen is coming up with the perfect design that will allow you to maximize every square foot of this place.

You can’t have a bathroom without a shower. Since there are so many to choose from, you should go for the wet room style shower to increase the sense of space. Make sure you consult with a good supplier on the showerhead and tiles who can give good advice to make the room feel spacious and light.

If you want to put a bathtub there, make sure the structure in the bottom can handle the weight. These same goes for your vanity table and toilet by supporting the walls and floor. For those using wood, replace the old 2×4’s or 2×6’s with 2×8’s. If this is not possible, add more of the old ones to support it.

Homeowners who are using wood for the renovated attic must apply oil to protect this against water. You can even use the same material for the flooring since there are variants that are engineered for use in the bathroom. Read the rest of this entry »

An Introduction to Futons

28 Apr

Futons have been a fixture of college students’ dorm rooms and other urban living settings for decades.  Futons are stylish, functional, and versatile; they can be integrated into nearly any setting.  Futon beds are lightweight and simple, providing sleepers with a comfortable place to rest.

What most people don’t know is that futon beds originated in Japan.  For hundreds of years, Japanese people have slept on thin futon mattresses placed directly on the floor.  They saw no need to have an elaborate bed with a frame and box spring and headboard.  All that these early futons involved was the thin mattress, small pillows, and a blanket.  In the morning, the futon bed could be rolled up and put in a closet.  Over time, the concept of sleeping on futon beds spread to America.

Modern futons often have adjustable frames and can be used as either a couch or a bed, depending on how the frame is arranged.  The frames are usually made of colored metal, but can be wooden as well.  Futon beds do not needed to be folded out like couch beds. All the sleeper needs to do is push the back of the frame from the upright couch position to a horizontal bed position.  These setups are comfortable in either the couch or bed position and are great for accommodating overnight guests. This rule doesn’t just apply on the attic but on every part of the house. In every project that you want to do in your home, the safety of the people living in it must be the first consideration.
